“I Will Uphold You”

Wilfred A Peterson wrote, “Traditionally we think of God as being ‘above.’  In childhood we got the impression that God is up in the sky somewhere…I would have you think of God as underneath, like the foundation of a skyscraper, or the concrete foundations of a giant bridge.”

While there is a sense in which God is above us (Job 31:2; Psalm 113:4; etc.), there is also a sense in which He is beneath us.  It is because He is beneath us that He is able to uphold us.  The psalmists wrote of God, “Your right hand upholds me” (Psalm 18:35; 63:8; 119:117).  God speaking through Isaiah said, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).  How thankful we should be for having a God who is underneath us and able to uphold us, removing any reason for us to be anxious or afraid.
