The Eyes of the Lord
The phrase “the eyes of the Lord” appears several times throughout the pages of divine inspiration. Does God have fleshly eyes? What is God’s nature?
First, let’s notice what the Bible says about God’s nature and then some scriptures teaching about the eyes of the Lord. John 4:24 teaches that “God is a spirit.” Now, I’ll admit that I don’t know all I would like to know about what it means to be a spirit. But this much I do know; it is the opposite of having flesh and blood. Jesus himself tells us that “a spirit hath not flesh and bones” in Luke 24:39.
We must therefore conclude that the Lord’s eyes are not fleshly eyes, but spiritual eyes. The phrase “the eyes of the Lord” is used to accommodate our understanding. We must understand that God is not limited to a physical body with all its limitations. God is all seeing, all knowing, and all everything else we attribute to our fleshly bodies. We are limited; God is not, because he is a spirit being.
Notice Proverbs 15:3, “The eyes of the Lord are in everyplace…” We simply cannot escape the all-seeing eyes of God. “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth” says 2 Chronicles 16:9. The Psalmist gives us to understand that if “we were to ascend up into heaven or descend unto hell, we would still be under the surveillance of the eyes of the Lord”, Psalms 139:7-8.
Not only are the eyes of the Lord in every place, but they are also “beholding the evil and the good” according to Proverbs 15:3. Our God sees both good and evil. Job 34:21 tells us, “For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his goings.” We may be able to hide evil doings from men in this life, but we cannot hide them from God! Remember friends, there is an all-seeing eye watching you. Remember that song?
I’m very thankful that the eyes of the lord are filled with grace. I believe that if “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” Genesis 6:8, I can too.
We notice also that “the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry” according to Psalms 34:15. I don’t know of anything more comforting than knowing that, do you? The apostle Peter stated, “for the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil” 1 Peter 3:12. But be warned, God does not hear everyone’s prayer, only those who do that which is right in His sight. See Isaiah 59:1-2. Job 36:7 says, “He withdraws not his eyes from the righteous.”
